Review: The Wonkiest Witch

Wonky Inn Book 1 by Jeanne Wycherley

Some stories begin with a murder. This one begins with a funeral.

Alfhild Daemonne stands at her estranged mother’s witchy memorial service, watching a chapter of her life close—whether she likes it or not.

Before long, Alf discovers that her inheritance is more than magical: it’s financial. She’s now the owner of an ancient inn tucked deep in the English countryside.

Alf has spent most of her thirty years drifting through life and sidestepping her magical heritage. Taking over the inn feels reckless—but it’s the first real step forward she’s taken in years.

The story opens in London, where magic lives in the shadows of the modern city. Alf moves in and out of a hidden supernatural world that’s reminiscent of Harry Potter, but not derivative.

When Alf leaves London for the fictional village of Whittlecombe in Devon, the story shifts to the English countryside, where winding lanes, ancient buildings, and village gossip set the stage for magic—and murder.

The Wonky Inn is staffed by spirits staff who put the “dead” in dedicated. Alf’s grandmother—an autocratic ghost—keeps a watchful eye on the place. A maid who burned to death drifts through the halls trailing small puffs of smoke. The inn’s chef remains stubbornly spectral and communicates only in French. The result is a household that feels chaotic, magical, and oddly functional.

Alf’s enigmatic mentor, the wizard Shadowmender, shares just enough information to be helpful—and just little enough to be dangerous. Alf’s owl companion communicates mostly through hoots, yet she understands him perfectly. And behind the inn lies a haunted forest filled with primal, elemental threats.

Once you check into the Wonky Inn, you may not want to leave. Happily, you won’t have to. The Wonkiest Witch is the first book in Jeannie Wycherley’s Wonky Inn series, which means you can extend your stay for as long as you like.
